Yoga Ayurveda Research

According to the studies published by the Royal College of Nursing and the British Medical Journal, many primary care presentations are related to stress. Yoga has been shown to improve many health issues including anxiety, depression and stress.

It is affordable and can be done by nearly anyone of any age or ability. Yoga has also been shown to improve immune function and allows patients a way to engage in self-management.

Yoga For Kids Research

Yoga for Kids

A study published by the Journal of Child and Family Studies, explored the potential for positive effects of yoga sessions within a school setting for children with EBD (emotional and behavioral disorder) at an urban elementary school.

Children with EBD in an urban school completed a yoga intervention in small groups twice per week for 3 ½ months. Eighty percent of responders described being very satisfied with the intervention. Teachers reported improved attention in class and adaptive skills and reduced depressive symptoms, behavioral symptoms, and internalizing symptoms.

Nutrition & Healthy Eating

healthy diet

Food nourishes the body and gives us energy to get through each day. Healthy eating is fundamental to good health and is a key element in healthy human development, from the prenatal and early childhood years to later life stages. (Health Canada)

Adults who eat a healthy diet live longer and have a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. Healthy eating can help people with chronic diseases, manage these conditions and avoid complications. (CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

According to Amala Guha, of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Ayurveda places special emphasis on Ahar (diet) and Anna (food) and on the principle that healthy nutrition nourishes the mind, body and soul. Ayurveda does not discriminate food to be good or bad, but rather emphasizes various factors that influence food, such as its biological properties, origin, environmental factors, seasons, preparation, freshness and provides a logical explanation of how to balance food according to one's dosha and physical needs.

Massge for Kids Research

Massage for Kids

massage for kids

Data was reviewed on the effects of massage therapy on infants and children with various medical conditions. The infants include: premature infants, cocaine-exposed infants, HIV-exposed infants, infants parented by depressed mothers, and full-term infants without medical problems. The childhood conditions include: abuse (sexual and physical), asthma, autism, burns, cancer, developmental delays, dermatitis (psoriasis), diabetes, eating disorders (bulimia), juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, posttraumatic stress disorder, and psychiatric problems.

Generally, massage therapy resulted in lower anxiety and stress hormones and improved clinical courses. (1994, Field, T. Massage Therapy for Infants and Children, Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics)

Prenatal Massage Research

Prenatal Massage

In 1999 The Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology published a study on the benefits of massage therapy on pregnant women. Twenty-six pregnant women were assigned to a massage therapy or a relaxation therapy group for 5 weeks. The therapies consisted of 20-min sessions twice a week. Both groups reported feeling less anxious after the first session and less leg pain after the first and last session.

Only the massage therapy group, however, reported reduced anxiety, improved mood, better sleep, and less back pain by the end of the study. In addition, urinary stress hormone levels (norepinephrine) decreased for the massage therapy group and the women had fewer complications during labor and their infants had fewer postnatal complications.

Meditation

meditation

A 2006 study published by the National institute of Health mentions that, research indicates that long-term meditation practice is associated with altered resting electroencephalogram patterns, suggestive of long-lasting changes in brain activity. They hypothesized that meditation practice might also be associated with changes in the brain’s physical structure. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess cortical thickness in 20 participants with extensive Insight meditation experience, which involves focused attention to internal experiences.

Brain regions associated with attention, interception and sensory processing were thicker in meditation participants than matched controls, including the prefrontal cortex and right anterior insula. Their initial results suggest that meditation may be associated with structural changes in areas of the brain that are important for sensory, cognitive, and emotional processing. The data further suggest that meditation may impact age related declines in cortical structure.

Sound Therapy Research

Sound Therapy

sound therapy

Researchers Salamon, Elliott, et al. published an article titled Sound Therapy Induced Relaxation: Down Regulating Stress Processes and Pathologies (2003) on the Medical Monitor where they mention that, the use of music as a means of inducing positive emotions and subsequent relaxation has been studied extensively by researchers. A great deal of this research has been centered on the use of music as a means of reducing feelings of anxiety and stress as well as aiding in the relief of numerous pathologies.

The precise mechanism responsible for these mediated effects has not been truly determined. In the current report we propose that nitric oxide (NO) is the molecule chiefly responsible for these physiological and psychological relaxing effects. This molecule's importance extends beyond the mechanistic, and is required for the development of the very process that it mediates. Nitric oxide (which is produced naturally in the body) has been determined to aid in the development of the auditory system and participate in cochlear blood flow. Furthermore, NO has been shown to be a necessary molecule in the development of the auditory system, which is required to enable music to act as a relaxant. We believe that the complex nitric oxide signaling system is the primary and fundamental method by which music acts as a relaxation device.
